Don’t you just love a sweet and tart combination? This Maple Syrup Lime Dressing does exactly that!
Jump to:
To combine maple syrup with lime juice seems counterintuitive but it really helps balance the flavours well. This is a simple salad dressing that we love to mix in with fruit salad to give it an extra pop of flavour at the end of a meal.
Maple syrup is traditionally a natural product made from sap of sugar maple, red maple or black maple trees.
It was first made and used by the indigenous people of North America and eventually adopted by European settlers who put into mass production. C
anada is the largest producer of modern day maple syrup, counting up to 70% of the global production.
Difference Between Maple Syrup and Honey?
Although we do sometimes use honey and maple syrup interchangeably as sweeteners, they are some noticeable differences.
To start, maple syrup is derived from maple trees whilst honey is from bees. Therefore for our vegan friends, they tend not to have honey in their diet.
Secondly maple syrup has a more caramel and woody flavour versus honey will be more light and fragrant based on the pollen from flowers that the bees carry. And if we look at calories, honey does have more carbs and calories than maple syrup.
Maple syrup is a staple in our homes. Not only do we love to drizzle over pancakes, we like to add to our salad dressings, mix with roast carrots or Brussel sprouts, include in our glazes for roast meats or bacon and toasted pecans or walnuts.
The sweetness it adds makes it a crowd favourite.
For this simple Maple Syrup Lime dressing, the sweetness is balanced with lime juice to create a refreshing and zesty salad dressing.
Have a go and create fruit salads with these combinations – rockmelon, honeydew melon, pineapple, ruby grapefruit, oranges, kiwi fruit, passionfruit and tangelo. This salad dressing will help bring out the sweetness and tame the acidity to create perfect harmony.
Ingredients
These are the ingredients you need for maple syrup lime dressing:
Honey: Nothing beats pure honey and I love getting a small jar from farmers markets when I know they have all been recently bottled and ever so fresh.
I actually also love getting honeycomb stepped in honey too. They are excellent additions to any grazing board.
Maple syrup: I know, how decadent to have both honey and maple syrup in the one recipe! But why not? We are after a sweet dressing and they both play a part on the overall flavours.
Lime and orange juice: Adding the juices of 2 citrus fruits to give the dressing the tartness it requires.
Instructions
Step by step instructions for how to make maple syrup lime dressing:
In a mixing bowl, add honey, maple syrup and the juice from the orange and lime. Whisk well.
The consistency should almost be like a juice rather than a drizzle. If you prefer the dressing to have more of a syrupy consistency, half the juice from the lime and orange.
