Welcome to The Sidesmith

We’re Amy, Phenie and Sammy and we’re the recipe creators of all things salads, sides, dressings and small plates.

5 years in the making and hundreds of recipes later, we have come to pride ourselves on being really good at creating authentic recipes for anyone needing to inject something a little extra at every meal.

What started out as purely a salad website has now expanded to include homemade salad dressings, a comprehensive collection of side dishes, and, very soon, the big world of small plates.

Our recipes are vegetable-centric, which makes for much-needed additions to any dinner table. We love to hone in on what’s seasonal, exciting and most importantly, understanding how to meld different ingredients together to make a new side.

We don’t publish anything until it has been tested and tried, and in some cases, tried over and over again because it is constantly being requested by our family and friends.

We always try our best to cater to all our recipe consumers, from our vegan followers to our mega social entertainers. We have recipes that don’t require cooking and sides that are perfect for meal planning while also producing the showstoppers for those craving a point of difference or chasing that wow factor.

Got a lamb or vegetable stew on, grilling some fish or cooking up an impressive piece of steak and need a side that will complement your efforts? You’ve come to the right place!

Feel free to search through our recipe index for something specific, or just scroll through our recipe collections for inspiration.

We’re incredibly excited to share everything we love about sides. As the largest website dedicated specifically to side recipes, we hope you’ll keep coming back for more.

The Rebrand From The Devil Wears Salad

The Story Behind Our New Name: The Sidesmith

It feels like only yesterday when we started our journey with “The Devil Wears Salad,” a cheeky nod to our love affair with creating vibrant, unique salad recipes.

But guess what? Life’s a bit like cooking—you start with a recipe, and then you find yourself improvising, adding a pinch of this, a dash of that until you’ve created something entirely new and unexpected.

Maybe it was the new year making us feel all adventurous, or perhaps we got a bit too excited throwing new ingredients into the mix (classic us, really).

Suddenly, it hit us—we’re not just about salads anymore! Our kitchen adventures have taken us to the far corners of the culinary world, from hearty side dishes to elegant small plates. So, here we are, turning the page to a new chapter: The Sidesmith.

Why “The Sidesmith”?

It just felt right! The name “The Sidesmith” blends our passion for side dishes with the skill and precision that ‘smith’ implies.

For us, it’s not just about the dishes; it’s the craft, the imagination, and the heart we pour into each creation. We’ve honed a particular expertise in this space, and it’s time we embrace that fully.

We’re recognised by our peers as the experts in salads and side dishes, and we’re proud of that. It reflects our journey from focusing solely on salads to embracing the wide, wonderful world of sides.

Together at The Sidesmith Table

We believe in the magic that happens around the table, where good food brings together good people. And here’s the thing—salads (and those scrumptious sides!) can indeed make friends.

So, raise your forks to new beginnings, adventures in cooking, and the endless joy of sharing good food.

FEED YOUR FOMO! For more sides and salads, subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube to get our latest updates.

Hey! I’m Amy! I’m not quite sure how it happened but along the way, I was dubbed “The Salad Queen”. At parties when I have to bring a plate, my family and friends have stopped giving me the choice of contributing anything else but a salad or two.

Nothing gives me more joy when a side or salad gets the praises it so deserves and I secretly do love it when it outshines the main course.

I was born in Malaysia, a country where the culinary culture is somewhat obsessive in nature. Malaysians will drive miles in peak hour traffic just to get a bowl of noodles from an old school sidewalk hawker stall.

My mother loved to entertain and as a child, I always looked forward to opening our house for Chinese New Year. I have no doubt that dinner party gene was passed down to me.

The hungers in my life span beyond food into travel. It is another great passion of mine and it expands my culinary repertoire. Constantly inspiring and a marriage made in heaven. Oh… and let’s not forget my insatiable appetite for an exemplary Pinot Noir. Food. Travel. Wine. Need I say more?

Salads play a big part on our family dinner table. The salads I make are made with love and care, sprinkled with my daughter’s enthusiasm to help along the way. The Sidesmith is my creative outlet as we build the biggest salad website for all to enjoy!

Hello! Sammy here! Being a Vietnamese born Chinese growing up in Australia and married to a Malaysian (phew that was long!) – my food is influenced by so many cultures. Having lived in London and travelling for 4 years opened up my taste buds even more.

Blending and balancing the contrasting flavours from all around the world is so much fun. Being in Australia, we are lucky to have such a multicultural community where I get to discover new ingredients and creative dishes. So whether it be cooking comforting meals for my family, throwing an impromptu catch up with friends or just devouring like a foodie at cool local eats, good food warms my soul.

Salads have always been my thing in my circle of friends. Just like Amy, I am often asked to bring “the salad” to the party. And the thought of having the most boring dish on the table ain’t my thing. I love to show you stylish salads and sides that commands attention, too good to pass up and everyone coming back for more. Seriously. Don’t be afraid. It’s not hard.

Sharing recipes and ideas for yummy salads and sides through The Sidesmith is a new adventure for me. Writing it down and passing on how to make them will put my “wing it” approach to the test for sure!

So my mantra is to create what you feel is right, never be afraid to style it up and add your own twist. You never know what kind of salad goodness you can make!

Heya! I’m Phenie and The Sidesmith is my marketing playground.

I’m the one in the background sitting behind my iMac conjuring up ideas on how we can get our salad recipes seen by the world, scheduling social media posts and painfully editing videos so that they’re “social-ready”.

I’m given the freedom to apply my role as a social media marketer to a space I love – FOOD – so it’s all fun and exciting until Mr. Zuckerberg changes the algorithm again.

Oh and let’s not forget I’m also the professional test kitchen taster for Amy and Sammy!

As a typical Australian-born Chinese living in Melbourne, life growing up revolved around traditional Cantonese food, watching TVB series (a Hong Kong TV channel) and bonding with other kids who were also forced to go to Chinese school. My dad owned a succession of Chinese restaurants, but it wasn’t from him that I learnt my cooking.

It was from my mum. In my late 20s, after having worked in Singapore for 6 years, I decided that I needed to learn to cook every dish that I loved growing up before they were lost forever. My mum taught me how to cook every one of those dishes and it was from that point that my love for food started.

I love eating out and finding the next big thing in gourmet food but with 3 kids, it doesn’t happen all too often. Instead, we spend a lot of time entertaining at home or hanging out at someone’s abode.

It’s usually over some elaborate menu of delicious food or when we’re not up to cooking, getting take-out from our favourite local joints. Nevertheless, it’s always over delectable, good food (and wine!).

So you can say this (ad)venture is perfect for me! I love sharing delicious recipes with you and hanging out with you on social. And they say you can’t make friends with salad. *PFFT* We proved them wrong!

How The Sidesmith Came to Be

Do you ever sit back sometimes and think about how the decisions you have made or how the paths you have chosen all end up in this very moment in your life?

We do!

Every time we look back at how The Sidesmith was created, we shake our heads in wonder. This salad and sides recipe website came to fruition when the stars aligned and put all of us work from home mums, who were searching for their next business venture, together.

So how do we know each other?

Phenie and Sammy are family by marriage. Their husbands are cousins who can’t go past a week without a good whisky session.

Phenie and Amy are long time friends united by travel wanderlust and smashingly good food.

Phenie introduced Amy and Sammy and through our coincidental love for salads, entertaining, digital marketing, and the desire to create an online business so we could continue to work from home, The Sidesmith was born.

The evolution of the website took on a life of its own. Not only did we share our interests for salads and sides and the online world, we were so in tuned with our brand, business, and marketing vision.

This has continued since inception and we love everything about this journey. Well, it does help when we have prop shopping days, “research” lunches and emergency meetings because we found a fabulous bottle of wine.

Do enjoy making our recipes and reading our food stories. We hope you’ll enjoy our salad recipe website as much as we do!

That’s all.
Amy, Sammy and Phenie

P.S. We love a good collab and believe that magic happens when visions align. If you would like to Work with Us, we would love to hear from you!
