Over 40 countries around the world celebrate Father’s Day on the 3rd Sunday of June with the United States taking charge and declaring this a National Holiday in 1972.

The rest of the world, including us in Australia don’t celebrate Father’s Day until September, which calls for Springtime feasting.

The origin of Father’s Day in the United States has a dual past. Two stories that are not intertwined but continuously shared as to how Father’s Day came to be.

The first story originated in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. There was a deadly mine explosion that killed 361 men and a lady by the name of Grace Golden Clayton impressed upon the minister of the local church to hold services to mourn the fathers.

This was noted as the first real celebration of fathers and set the notion in place.

The second story is perhaps the one that most believe to be true. In 1910, a woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honouring her father, William Smart, after she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in a church in Washington State.

Her father was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their 6th child. He was left to look after and raise all 6 children on his own in a small farm and she wanted to show her appreciation at what a wonderful father he was.

She wanted to pay homage to him on his birthday which was on June 5th but for whatever reason it may have been, the celebration was deferred to the 3rd Sunday of June.

It wasn’t however until 1972 that it was declared a National Holiday under the Nixon administration.

Father’s Day has certainly evolved over the years despite taking a back seat to Mother’s Day. Nowadays, it is given the same amount of commercial hype, which sees restaurants packed, gifts flowing and plenty of homemade meals.

For our Northern Hemisphere friends, enjoy the balmy summers and get those barbeques going. To help complete the meal, here are some delectable salads for Father’s Day that make for great sides!
