Maple Hummus Dressing
Luscious and moreish, our maple hummus dressing is deliciously simple and works as an excellent alternative for those looking for a dairy-free creamy salad dressing.
What is Hummus?
Hummus might seem very bland to look at – a beige bowl of mush. However, looks can be deceiving.
This popular dip is far from boring. The flavour combination of chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil creates a moreish dip that we can’t get enough of.
Although we are unsure exactly where hummus first started, we do know it originated from the Middle East and is now possibly one of the most popular dips around the globe.
Is Hummus Healthy?
One of the main ingredients in hummus is chickpeas.
This superfood is becoming very popular as it is a readily available and affordable ingredient.
Chickpeas, a member of the pulse family, delivers a good source of fibre and plant-based protein which makes hummus an excellent option for vegetarian and vegan diets.
Also, hummus is naturally high in good fat plus also contains iron, folate, calcium, phosphorus and B vitamins.
All in all, hummus is a healthy ingredient to add to your diet.
How to Use Hummus in Salads?
Not only is hummus delicious by itself, but it is also a versatile ingredient to add to salads.
Hummus can replace dairy products, like mayonnaise or cream, that you might use in traditional creamy salad dressings. This would make the salad dressing suitable for vegans.
There are homemade hummus recipes around, but we find store bought is perfectly fine too. Best to select one that is low on saturated oils and no preservatives.
To create a luscious but dairy free dressing, we combine hummus with dijon mustard and lemon juice to loosen up the thick texture of hummus. Then we add maple syrup for a little sweetness to round the dressing off.
Our maple hummus dressing works magic and you could try to make a dairy-free potato salad or even a pasta salad.
Or you can simply use hummus as it is and create a base or side addition to a salad recipe as we have done with our Dutch Carrot Salad with Hummus and Soft-Boiled Eggs or Easy Vegan Falafel Salad with Hummus.
Ingredients
These are the ingredients you need for maple hummus dressing:
Hummus: Select your favourite hummus recipe for this dressing. You can certainly make your own too if you wish but for convenience we tend to buy pre-made hummus.
Dijon Mustard: If you’re able to, grab yourself some Grey Poupon Dijon mustard. The first batch of mustard was made back in the 1860’s in Dijon, France and was instantly a winning formula. The Maille brand is also great and a much easier Dijon mustard to find.
Lemon Juice: Add lemon juice for natural acidity and tartness.
Maple Syrup: The nectar of the Gods so to speak. The hints of caramel and vanilla sure makes a great addition to the recipe.
