Citrus Red Wine Vinaigrette

Red wine vinegar is a staple in my pantry and makes a more than regular appearance in my salad dressings.

It occurred to me when I was making this vinaigrette that I never really stopped to think about what it really is and does it actually have any health benefits?

Vinegar is a liquid that consists of acetic acid and water. Red wine is but one of many different types of vinegars we can find. Red wine is left to ferment until it becomes sour.

The intensity of its flavour is dependent upon how long it is aged for. Obviously, the longer it is aged, the more robust it is and the less full on its taste.

From a nutrition perspective, it’s a popular condiment because it has no fat, zero carbs and has some vitamin C. It also contains traces of calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium.

From a salad dressing perspective, it makes a whole lot of sense to add vinegar to allow for a truly intense flavour and to help enhance a salad. It’s all about balance!

Ingredients

These are the ingredients you need for citrus red wine vinaigrette:

Red wine vinegar: Add a good splash of good quality red wine vinegar for a tart and intense flavour. Never hurts to invest in a well aged red wine vinegar if you’re a salad lover. It will never go to waste.

For a good quality red wine vinegar with a good price tag, try Pompeian Red Wine Vinegar or if you’d like to splurge a little on a good barrel aged vinegar you can try Fini Red Wine Vinegar.

Orange: Squeeze some fresh orange juice into the dressing for those lovely citrus notes.

Olive oil: Can’t have a vinaigrette without olive oil!

Salt and pepper: Sprinkle and/or crack some in the dressing for seasoning.

I was looking for a citrus vinaigrette and am so glad I found this one. I love the combination of orange juice with red wine vinegar – all tart and sweet at the same time! I’ll use this one again and again!
